Training FAQs
What is a BAT Certificate?
A Breath Alcohol Technician (BAT) certificate is issued by your instructor and attests that you understand the Department of Transportation's (DOT) rules and regulations as detailed in their published document 49CFR Part 40 as well as the appropriate instrument operation. This certificate is instrument-specific and must be renewed once every 5 years through a refresher course.
What is a Lifeloc Operator and Calibration Technician Certificate?
The DOT requires that, as a user of a Lifeloc EBT, you must follow the Lifeloc Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) for that device. Upon successful completion of operator and calibration training on a Lifeloc Evidentiary Breath tester (EBT) Lifeloc issues certification attesting that you are proficient and qualified to inspect, maintain, and perform calibrations on that specific EBT. Both the BAT certificate that your instructor has issued and a certificate for the specific EBT you trained on are needed to ensure compliance with the provisions of 49 CFR Part 40.
Note: It is required that training on a Lifeloc EBT be conducted by a Lifeloc Certified Master or Provisional trainer. Always confirm that your instructor has the required Lifeloc training credentials. Training by unauthorized personnel will result in invalid credentials.
